South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI)’s is to serve as a catalyst for sustainable energy innovation, transformation, and technology diffusion in support of South Africa’s sustainable development and as such has a valuable role to play in the green hydrogen sector development in South Africa. To support the SANEDI mandate on sustainable energy innovation, a collaboration between SANEDI and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) was established in 2022 under the H2.SA project. H2.SA is a multi-stakeholder initiative that promotes South Africa as a leading green hydrogen producer and investment destination of choice. The political partner of H2.SA is the Investment Infrastructure Office (IIO) in The Presidency. This collaboration further aims to enhance processes, co-ordination and management of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) Energy Secretariat, leading to increased research, innovation, and commercialisation outputs of the green hydrogen research portfolio of South Africa. The support is structured into two main packages as follows:
1. Green hydrogen research: Co-ordination of research collaboration between private and public sector, academia and industry associations regarding green hydrogen research, innovation, and training.
2. Green hydrogen information dissemination: Green hydrogen is a new topic for South Africa and stakeholders require reliable and trustworthy information for decision-making from a reputable source.
